Midmar is a very rural area ~20 miles west of Aberdeen, and 10-15 miles from to the nearest towns & villages: Alford, Banchory, Inverurie, and Westhill.
With relatively limited facilities the community relies on a strong network of social clubs and community initiatives. Towards the end of 2018 a number of local people started thinking about establishing a Men’s Shed in the area.
We are inspired by what has been achieved at other local Sheds, especially the success of the Westhill Shed. We see this as a significant opportunity to establish an inclusive local meeting place for like minded people to mix with others, pursue hobbies and interests, or simply socialise without the need to travel far. It is a well established fact that loneliness and isolation can adversely affect ones health and well being and perhaps more so in rural areas where there are significantly fewer facilities and opportunities to socialise locally.
We are currently seeking out the skills and resources within the area to help with establishing the Shed but at the same time recognise the need to secure significant funding for material costs and for the labour and services beyond the benefit in kind of that we might secure locally
The Midmar Hall Committee have been very supportive of our Project, from the start – allowing us to locate the our temporary Shed on unused grounds at the rear of the Hall.
